Cone Health Foundation’s mission is to invest in the development and support of activities, programs and organizations that measurably improve the health of people in the greater Greensboro area. Our strategic focus is to solve some of our community's most intractable health problems. Through our grant program, we direct attention and resources to four funding priorities: accessing healthcare, stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS, reducing the number of adolescents who give birth and persistent substance abuse and growing mental health concerns.
How has your organization adapted in response to the recession?
Knowing that budget cuts often mean eliminating expenses for travel and professional development, we invited all active grantees to take advantage of a one-time, non-competitive $1,500 award. This award could be usedto support professional development, planning or training for full- or part-time staff and/or volunteers, team building activities, or to conduct strategic planning. We are more determined than ever to advance our vision for Guilford County by supporting grantees in developing the best possible response to new realities.
What can nonprofits do to improve their fundraising or operations?
Nonprofits serve themselves and society well when they stick to the mission they are charged with carrying out. Don’t chase grant dollars and create programs simply because dollars are available. Enlist donors and supporters who share your passion and commitment to your work. Those donors will still be there long after foundation dollars have come and gone.
