Why did you get involved in charitable work?
I became involved in charitable work to help change the lives of people in my community for the better. My motivation was seeing others do this when I was in my first career as a journalist. I felt that I needed to “get my hands dirty” rather than just write about the good work that others did.

How does your charitable work affect you personally?
Charitable work affects me in that it keeps my own standards of community service high and continually challenges my assumptions. It also makes me feel good about myself when I use my time in positive ways and see differences in those I have helped.

What can nonprofits do to improve their fundraising or operations?

Nonprofits can be crystal clear about the community needs that they address, and the strategies that they are using to address those needs. I sometimes encounter nonprofit organizations that need help in these areas because they have lost their focus on the problems they seek to solve or on the best means to work with others to correct the problems. Operationally, I would enjoy seeing more nonprofit personnel take a “time out” to plan their week or month for maximum effectiveness, and to solve efficiency issues that are important but get placed on the back burner.

What makes an effective leader?
An effective leader leads by example, keeps promises and makes decisions based on the mission of the organization. A strong leader of nonprofit organizations plays an active role in fundraising and manages employees to accomplish goals, as opposed to restricting delegation of tasks.
