Patricia Reid
Development director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh has served the 54 counties of eastern North Carolina for more than a century. Affiliated with Catholic Charities USA, our role is to carry out the social mission of the Church and serve all those in need without any form of discrimination. We provide family support, counseling, emergency assistance, parish social ministry and other programs.
Why did you get involved in charitable work?
I previously worked for U.S. Senator Chris Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut, from 1978 to 1986. I always sought work outside for-profit industry, and philanthropic work seemed a good use of my talents and a way to help others.
How can charitable giving be improved?
Become more personally involved with our donors, addressing their desires and meeting their expectations as much as is realistic.
What can nonprofits do to improve their fundraising or operations?
Invest more resources in staffing. The adage, “It costs money to make money,” has solid foundation.
How has your organization adapted in response to the recession?
Frozen all salaries, no “new” hires, kept the budget tight.
What makes an effective leader?
A leader advocates, creates and is open to change. A strong leader always surrounds her/himself with excellent staff and puts her/his trust in them.
Better pay.
