Why did you get involved in charitable work?
I became involved in charitable work because I wanted to help people. I’m especially interested in helping underserved overcome obstacles that hold them back.
How does your charitable work affect you personally?
I find this kind of work spiritually rewarding, as I watch people achieve and exceed their goals. It makes me want to get out of bed in the morning and go to work.
How has your organization adapted in response to the recession?
Like most nonprofits, ours has had to cut expenses during the recession. To meet our annual budget, we depend heavily on volunteers, in-kind donations and generous giving from churches and individuals. We remain optimistic about our future, as we are making plans to grow.
What makes an effective leader?
An effective leader holds the vision for an organization, initiates positive change where needed and guides the team toward achieving success. She keeps a clear focus on the direction the organization is heading and works collaboratively with her team and others to meet goals. Communication skills and positive thinking are key to her ability to attract strong talent and maintain a healthy support network.
