President, Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc.
The Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), based in Raleigh, N.C., is a national nonprofit accreditation organization. ACHC educates health-care providers through program-specific standards and on-site peer-review surveys. The goal is to lead home-care providers to successful business practices and improved patient services. Accreditation programs include: Home Health, Hospice, Home Medical Equipment Suppliers, Private Duty Nursing and Aide, Home Pharmacy Infusion, Sleep Labs and Behavioral Health.
Why did you get involved in charitable work?
I have been in nonprofit management for over 30 years. I started in hospital management, ran an outpatient rehabilitation clinic for handicapped children and then took the lead of ACHC. I have been motivated to be behind the scenes, stimulating others to focus on the best services possible for people.
How does your charitable work affect you personally?
Promoting quality and accountability in health care for patients to receive better care is fulfilling to me.
What makes an effective leader?
A leader is one who establishes trust, listens to others and takes the lead to act. I have also learned that the best leader is one who can follow others, especially those who report to you.
