Christine Smith
Executive director of NAMI – Western Carolina
NAMI Western Carolina is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. Members are families, friends and people living with mental illness. NAMI offers free education classes and support groups. We are also involved in advocating for the rights of the mentally ill on a local, state and national level, and we teach people to advocate for themselves and others.

Why did you get involved in charitable work?
I am a career nonprofit administrator. I like to be involved with organizations that focus on social services, education and the arts. These are necessities in our country that are too often marginalized.
How does your charitable work affect you personally?
I feel that I am making a contribution to others on a one-on-one basis and that every little bit of work can make a big difference. I also enjoy working with and learning from others.
How can charitable giving be improved?
Literally, that’s the million-dollar question in our current economy.
How has your organization adapted in response to the recession?
We have had to do more outreach than ever before and have focused on partnering with other organizations to cut costs and avoid duplication of efforts.
What makes an effective leader?
An effective leader has vision, is able to see the big picture and works with staff and volunteers in a respectful way. Humor is essential.
