Wachovia embraces teacher initiative

Company provides broad range of support for national teaching corps By Todd Cohen CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wachovia likes Teach for America. The bank provides the national teaching corps of recent college grads with key executives for its national and regional boards. Local Wachovia offices make grants to local Teach for America offices, and encourage employees to volunteer in schools served by Teach for America teachers. Wachovia encourages other companies to support Teach for America, and invited it to apply for the company’s strategic philanthropic initiative that is providing $15 million over three years to 23 programs aimed at improving teacher retention. And the bank asks the local office of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America to consider donating to Teach for America $1 million in proceeds from the Wachovia Championship, which the bank sponsors in its hometown of Charlotte. “We’re always looking for ways to leverage other parts of Wachovia in an effective way to support organizations we support, especially key partners,” says Frank Addison, director of philanthropy for the company.
