Rex pledges funds to fight obesity

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In the first phase of its long-term commitment to fight childhood obesity, the John Rex Endowment in Raleigh has dedicated $2.5 million to a handful of community partners. As part of the Childhood Obesity Initiative, 15 schools and five neighborhood partners have received grants totaling $450,000. The 15 Wake County Public School System elementary schools will receive $10,000 per school annually for three years to implement programs that create healthier school environments. An additional $450,000 will be disbursed to the 15 schools in 2008. A total of $600,000 will be awarded to the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Town of Cary, the Town of Holly Springs, Gethsemane Seventh Day Adventist Church and Triangle Transit Authority for programs meant to increase access and reduce barriers to active living. The WakeMed Pediatric Diabetes Program will also receive $480,000 in funding, an addition to a previous grant to expand care for the growing number of children referred to the program.
