* Durham’s Partnership for Children released its 2007 Investor’s Report, which highlights the importance to the state’s economy of investing in early childhood development. * Marvin J. Malecha, dean, College of Design, North Carolina State University, elected as 2008 first vice president/president-elect of American Institute of Architects. * East Carolina University named by National Forest Foundation as 2007 award recipient through Wilderness Stewardship Challenge program, for nonprofit organizations implementing on-the-ground projects benefiting Wilderness Areas within National Forests and Grasslands. * Kelliegh Smith, former director of major gifts for Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC-Chapel Hill, named director of capital giving, WakeMed Foundation, to manage overall activities of Campaign 2011. * Duke Children’s Classic to take place May 19-20 at Duke University Golf Club to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center. * KidsPeace, Raleigh foster care agency, will celebrate 125th anniversary May 16 with a birthday party, as part of National Foster Care Awareness Month. * US Airways extended invitation to local nonprofits to meet its Community Relations team, learn more about airline’s philanthropic efforts in Charlotte and hear details of 2nd Annual Reach Out to Charlotte Nonprofits with US! Raffle. * Annie Lee Epley, retired managing operator, Asheville Savings Bank, received third annual “Banking Legend” Award during annual Women in Banking Conference, held by North Carolina Banker’s Association. * Rosalyn Allison-Jacobs named interim executive director, Executive Service Corps of the Charlotte Region, to succeed retiring Executive Director Donna C. Arrington. * Samuel Cole Salon and Salon Moxie, both of North Raleigh, are now “Locks of Love” salons, offering free shampoo, cut and style to anyone donating hair to Locks of Love. * Solution Center will serve as Crystal-level sponsor for 2007 Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure through $2,500 and donation of 4,500 bottles of water for participants. * Kenneth Turpen, former executive director, Philanthropic Service for Institutions, Maryland, named executive director, University Health Systems Foundation and Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation, Greenville, replacing retired Executive Diretor Brenda Joyner. * Annual “Music for Miracles” Radiothon raised $217,000 to benefit Children’s Miracle Network, supporting programs and services of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina’s Hospital, Greenville. * Jim Crawford Memorial CASI State Championship Chili Cook-off took place at Piedmont Triad Farmers Market to benefit Epilepsy Medication Fund. * American Heart Association presented Award of Meritorious Achievement to Larry B. Goldstein, professor of medicine and neurology at Duke University Medical Center, for work on stroke-related initiatives. * Valerie Vizena named executive director of The Enrichment Center in Winston-Salem, affiliated chapter of The Arc of North Carolina. * United Way of Cumberland County hosted annual Days of Caring event, giving companies, employees and individuals opportunity to come together and give back to community.
