* About 60 employees from Asheboro Wal-Mart store volunteered time July 24 to paint interior of N.C. Zoo’s new elephant barn, part of new $8.5 million elephant, rhino exhibit expansion.

* Sarah L. Taylor, former manager of administrative services, North Carolina Community Foundation, promoted to program associate, will manage fund agreements and administration of grants, scholarships.

* Charlotte Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals to hold 2007 National Philanthropy Day Nov. 15, Charlotte Convention Center; nomination forms for various award categories due Aug. 17.

* State Board of Community Colleges, Raleigh, re-elected Chair Hilda Pinnix-Ragland and Vice Chair Dr. Linwood Powell to second two-year terms; presidential search committee reported completion of “presidential profile” to be used in selecting new president.

* Diana Urieta named new prevention network director for Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina.

* David M. Trebing, director of U.S. State, Canadian policy at SAS institute, joined board at Curamericas Global.

* Shellie Pfohl, CEO, vice president of Be Active North Carolina, received President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Community Leadership Award, honor for health, wellness professionals.

* Kerri L.S. Mast, former law firm associate, Moore & Van Allen, named vice president of planned giving, Foundation for the Carolinas.

* The 1927 Club held 80th Birthday Celebration Charity Bridge Game July 15; 100 bridge players raised $3,600 and over four barrels of food for Loaves & Fishes, surpassing goal of $1,000.

* Knight Chair at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication, now titled Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economics, reflecting refocus on 21st century economics models.

* Pioneer Strategies, Raleigh public relations agency, adopted Strike for Survival, nonprofit that sponsors fundraisers benefiting American Cancer Society, as summer/fall 2007 pro bono client.

* Cisco volunteers, along with members from City Year Columbia, came from South Carolina to Raleigh on Cisco/City Year Service day, July 25, to prepare Interact building for renovation.

* Charlotte Rotary Club presented 12 area high school students, children of Charlotte-Mecklenburg public-safety department employees, with four-year scholarships.

* Guildford Green Foundation to move office from home of Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro to Guilford Building; GGF to continue partnership with community foundation.

* Heart of Giving Home Gallery and Alight Corporation to present “Art and Alight, Reunite,” Oct. 11, community fundraiser focusing on Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

* Andrea Bazan-Manson, president of Triangle Community Foundation, Walter C. Davenport, certified public accountant, elected to Blue Cross and Blue Shield board of trustees.

* Cast and crew of The Lion King to host The Lion Sings Tonight, cabaret-style show, Aug. 6 at McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square, Charlotte, benefiting Regional Aids Interfaith Network, along with Broadway Cares/ Equity Fight AIDS, visit http://www.blumenthalcenter.org/ to purchase tickets.

* The Duke Endowment published 2006 annual report noting record grants of $137 million during the year.
