* Four North Carolina School of the Arts graduates selected as 2007-2008 Kenan Fellows: Hannah Crowell, Elizabeth A. Purkey, Jeremy Skidmore, Diana Khoury.

* After collapse of old pantry, grand reopening for new Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Charlotte, to be held Aug. 28, by Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.

* Crisis Control Ministry, Winston-Salem, presented awards to several local restaurants for contribution during Hope du Jour, which raised $40,000.

* Barnabas Network Furniture Ministry providing new mattress sets and bed frames to Guilford County children through “No Child Left on the Floor” initiative.

* Jersey Mike’s Subs partnering with American Red Cross throughout September to raise awareness for blood donations; Triangle-area donors will receive free Jersey Mike’s Subs meal.

* United Way, Forsyth County, successfully completed all United Way of America membership requirements for 2007, including database survey of total resources generated.

* Alexander Family YMCA opened on Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, Aug. 27; grand opening celebration to take place Sept. 7 & 8.

* Annual Brenner Children’s Classic 5K Run, presented by LeBleu, to be held Sept. 8, Winston-Salem, N.C.; $1,500 grand prize goes to school collecting most money for this event.

* Boys and Girls Club, Wake County, announced newest board members:

  • Karen Lichtin, Lichtin Corporation
  • Mark Redmond, Capital Bank

* First United Methodist Church, Cary, sent team to Montero, Bolivia, to help with construction of Cruz Roja Health Center.

* First executive director of Edenton Historical Commission, Dr. Susan Schmidt, raising awareness/funds to preserve colonial port-town facing development pressures.

* Southern Pharmacy Services with SCA Tena have donated $1,000 each to become top-level sponsors for “Spaghetti Auction” dinner/art auction, to raise funds for Gatewood Center and Greensboro/Thomasville group homes.

* Kilpatrick Stockton, Atlanta, Ga., announced collection of 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies as part of 2007 Backpack Challenge.

* Association of Fundraising Professionals, Charlotte, announced two new scholarship programs, $500 Chamberlain Scholarship program, Norwood/Capstone Advancement Partners Scholarship; deadlines Sept. 30.

* National Commission for the Accreditation of Special Education Services announced its Grandfather Academy received national accreditation. 

* Patrick C. Graham, former director of emergency financial assistance and economic self-sufficiency, Crisis Assistance Ministry, named president and CEO, Urban League of Central Carolinas, Charlotte.
