* U.S. Department of Defense awarded over $5.2 million in 3 grants to University of Wisconsin-Madison to study chronic wasting disease.

* Starr Foundation, Edward Jones and AIG SunAmerica made joint challenge gift of $10 million over 5 years to Claremont Graduate University, California, for management education, largest award in university’s history.
* Paul G. Allen Foundation for Medical Research, W.M. Keck Foundation and businessman Donald J. Listwin gave $4.4 million to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, for new early detection initiative.
* McCormick Tribune Foundation, Chicago, gave $10.4 million to communities and special initiatives programs, and $2.6 million to 17 journalism programs.
* Arts & Business Council gave $220,000 to 10 cultural tourism promotion projects in New York State through funding by New York State Council on the Arts.
* John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Miami, launched $2.5 million investment over 5 years in Marshall Middle School in Muscogee County, Ga., to improve services and academic programs.
* Ronald McDonald House Charities awarded over $2 million in grants, including $1 million to Unites States Fund for UNICEF, third installment of a 5-year, $5 million grant.
* Gill Foundation gave $590,545 to 44 organizations and programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender initiatives and HIV/AIDS programs.
* Charles Stewart Mott Foundation made $2 million grant to University Park Estates, market-rate subdivision designed to draw residents to city center of Flint, Mich.

* The Boettcher Foundation has given $100,000 to Johnson & Wales University, bringing to $200 million its grant support for Colorado nonprofits.
* The Goldman Sachs Foundation has made $1.49 million in grants to educational organizations.
* North Carolina’s Rural Internet Access Authority will award college scholarships totaling more than $18,000 to 28 North Carolina students who volunteer with NC TechForce to provide Internet assistance and training to their communities.

* The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust awarded $4.52 million to 11 nonprofits in Paradise Valley, Ariz.
* Verizon has given $35,000 to eight nonprofits in North Idaho.
* The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund of The New York Times Fund has made a $1.4 million contribution to launch an emergency program to create 1,000 summer jobs for low-income teens in New York City.
* The United States Golf Association has awarded more than $2.4 million in new grants to help 100,000 economically disadvantaged youngsters and individuals with disabilities learn and grow through the game of golf, bringing to $37 million the awards the initiative has made since 1997.
