Tech notes - Digital gap targeted

By Todd Cohen * The American Computer Foundation in Waltham, Mass., and the Charles River Public Internet Center, a model project the foundation spawned, have merged, forming an organization that aims to narrow gaps in computer knowledge, access and literacy. * A collaborative effort funded with $9 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has launched webjunction.org, a resource site for public librarians that includes information on policies and practices, advice for buying hardware and software, message boards and online courses. Partners included the OCLC Online Computing Library Center, Isoph, TechSoup, Benton Foundation and Colorado State Library. * OneEconomy Corp. in Washington, D.C., has expanded its beehive.com web site for low-income people to include contributions from columnists on topics ranging from parenting and financial security to home décor and job-hunting. * The Give Foundation in Ahmedabad, India, has launched giveindia.org, a philanthropy portal that lets donors make online contributions, sign up to volunteer, shop for nonprofit products and find news and information.
