U.S./world - Donor fatigue - $200M shortfall

International aid groups say they will cut programs helping tens of thousands of refugees because of plunging support for the United Nations lead refugee agency, The Boston Globe reported May 7. The Geneva-based UN Office of High Commissioner for Refugees, charged with helping 23 million refugees throughout the world, faces a $200 million shortfall in contributions and could announce massive layoffs as early as this week, the Globe said. Already feeling the pinch from lagging support for the UN agency in recent years, many aid groups fear even bigger cuts could hurt their ability – and that of the UN agency – to feed, shelter and protect refugees, the newspaper said.
