Suharto to be questioned - Misuse of charitable funds alleged

Former Indonesia President Suharto will be questioned next week about allegations that he misused funds belonging to several charitable foundations, Indonesia’s attorney general announced Thursday.

Suharto’s lawyers have claimed that the former strongman, who is 78 and has had two strokes, was too ill to face questioning.

Suharto was forced to undergo a series of medical tests by state doctors earlier this month to test the truth of this claim.

Suharto is under investigation for channeling billions of dollars into insolvent banks as well as misusing charity funds.

Indonesia President Abdurrahman Wahid has said that Suharto must face trial if evidence of wrongdoing is found, but that a pardon is possible if Suharto returns the billions of dollars that went missing during his presidency.
