Thinning the herd - N.Y. groups to benefit

Phillips Auctioneers expect to raise $3 million for New York City charities from the sale of 75 hand-painted fiberglass cows currently on display throughout the city, the Associated Press reported Aug. 23.

“CowParade New York 2000” ends Labor Day, and Phillips plans to auction specially selected cows on Sept. 28. Cows to be auctioned will be displayed on Park Avenue and in the Grand Central Terminal before the sale.

The anticipated amount is based on a similar auction in Chicago last year, where the average price per cow was $35,000. The remaining members of the CowParade 2000 herd will be given to the city of New York for future display.
