CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina has awarded $692,183 in grants to 14 groups across the state.
The goal of the Chapel Hill-based funder's latest investment is to boost the health of vulnerable people in the state and encourage physical activity and good nutrition.
The North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Recreation and Dance in Raleigh received the largest single grant, $126,000 over two years, to expand its in-school program to prevent childhood obesity.
The Child Care Services Association in Chapel Hill received a two-year grant of $100,000 to increase access to healthy meals for children in Triangle child-care centers.
Another $73,000 will fund the expansion of a diabetes program at Pungo District Hospital in Beaufort County to create care plans for 200 medically underserved people.
The remaining grants ranged in size from $5,000 to $72,170.
