CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A $2 million grant from the Leon Levine Foundation in Charlotte will allow Central Piedmont Community College to fund scholarships and reopen classes closed due budget deficits.
The first installment of the grant initially was scheduled for 2010, but the foundation agreed to pay $300,000 this year to enable the Charlotte school to open an additional 150 classes that can accommodate 3,000 more students.
The college had to turn away 5,000 students last year because of a lack of resources.
The grant will endow scholarships for students pursuing degrees in information technology.
In recognition of the gift, the college will name its information technology building after Leon and Sandra Levine.
The Levines are long-time supporters of Central Piedmont Community College, giving $5 million to the school in 1998.
