Funders team up for cancer research

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Eight philanthropic groups have teamed up to form the Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition, which is giving $5.7 million to support clinical trials by the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center at Levine Children's Hospital.

The funding includes $1 million from the Alex Hemby Foundation and Hemby family, $1.85 million combined from six other coalition members, and $2.85 million in matching funds from The Leon Levine Foundation.

Phase I and II clinical trials the center plans will focus on leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, brain tumors, kidney cancer, and other bone and soft-tissue tumors.

"By expanding our clinical research capabilities, we are assuring families throughout this region that they can receive the latest treatments closer to home," Michael Tarwater, CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System, says in a statement.

The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center will be named for Torrence E. Hemby Jr., as well as new endowed fund.

Other members of the coalition include The Adam Faulk Tanksley Foundation, The Baby J Ladley Fund, Quail Hollow Champtionship, drumSTRONG, 24 Hours of Booty, and Brett's Ride for Rhabdo.
