Hurricanes’ foundation gives $220K for kids

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes' Kids 'N Community Foundation has given $220,169 to 20 local charities in its most recent grant cycle.

The announcement completes a record grant year for the charity arm of the National Hockey League team, which has distributed $578,094 among 37 charities since last fall.

Beneficiaries include grassroots groups like April's Angels, which provides dream bedrooms for chronically-ill children, and The Caring Community Foundation, whose support programs for cancer patients include projects centered on children.

Also receiving grants have been larger organizations like the John Avery Boys and Girls Club in Durham, Communities in Schools in Wake and Durham counties, and the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association.

New recipient Marbles Kids Museum will create an interactive hockey simulation featuring the Hurricanes.

Foundation funds come from Hurricanes players, corporate sponsors and fans. Since its establishment in 1997, the foundation has provided over $6 million to North Carolina children's charities and education programs.
