Pope Foundation awards $1.3 million

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Raleigh-based John William Pope Foundation has awarded nearly $1.3 million in local grants, including $858,000 mainly to arts, youth, humanitarian and educational groups, plus $440,000 for high education in the Raleigh area.

Grants to 39 local groups included: $200,000 for White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh; $180,000 for the Asheville School; $50,000 for Occoneechee Council, Boy Scouts; $25,000 each for Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina, StepUp Ministries, Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Theater, and Raleigh Fine Arts Society, all in Raleigh; $10,000 each for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Hospice of Wake County Foundation, North Carolina Opera Company, and Urban Ministries of Wake County; $5,000 each for Interfaith Food Shuttle, Raleigh Rescue Mission, Salvation Army of Wake County, Shepherd's Table, and YMCA of Central Raleigh.

Grants to universities included $300,000 to the Campbell University law school in downtown Raleigh, part of a $1.2 million pledge, and $140,000 for a program in public choice, law and economic at N.C. State University.

The John William Pope Foundation is a private family foundation supported by the late John W. Pope Sr. of Raleigh; his wife, Joyce W. Pope; and their children, Art Pope of Raleigh, Amanda Pope of Citra, Fla., and their late son, John William Pope Jr.

The foundation receives additional support from the family's business, Variety Wholesalers, which owns and operates Roses, Super 10 and other discount stores.
