Reynolds Foundation seeking award nominations

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation will honor the state's "unsung heroes" through its Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards.

The awards, which recognize North Carolinians striving to make an impact in their communities, are accompanied by a $25,000 grant, with $5,000 of the grant going to each winner and $20,000 to the charity of each winner's choice.

Awards are presented in each of three categories - advocacy, focusing on people, issues or concerns; personal service, honoring people helping others; and race relations, recognizing those who have acted to improve multiculturalism and serve as role models of racial understanding.

Nominations are due June 1 and can be submitted online at www.zsr.org by clicking on "Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards" or "Forms & Publications," or by calling the foundation at 336.725.7541.

The awards were established in 1986 in memory of Nancy Susan Reynolds, a philanthropist and founding member, president and lifetime trustee of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

Recipients of the 2007 awards were Dave Genova of Asheville, founder of the Unity project, which fights racism; Susan Hill of Raleigh, a long-time advocate for women's health rights; and Lillie Sanders of Magnolia, who works to help those in need in her rural community.
