School of the Arts inches closer to goal

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A decade after it received a challenge grant for its opera institute, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts is more than halfway to reaching its portion of the match, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Feb. 17.

The Winston-Salem-based school has brought in $3.5 million of the $5 million it must raise by 2013 to meet the match requirements of a $10 million challenge grant it received from the Raleigh-based A.J. Fletcher Foundation in 2001.

The A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute now must raise the remaining $1.5 million to draw down the full $10 million, half of which goes to an endowment for the Institute, with the remainder funding operations.

One million dollars of the amount raised so far funds the institute's Malcolm and Patricia Brown Distinguished Professorship in Music, and a planned gift of $1 million will be redirected to the institute's endowment.

Additional matching funds were raised through grants from the Spangler Foundation and the state of North Carolina, and through a concert given by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.
