WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust has promoted Allen J. Smart to lead its health-care division, effective Jan. 1.

Smart, who has served as senior program officer for the division since 2006, will succeed retiring director John H. Frank.

Before joining the Trust three years ago, Smart served as vice president of programs for the Rapides Foundation in Virginia.

While in the Trust's health-care division, he has overseen grantmaking for Eastern North Carolina in the areas of health-care access, diabetes, mental health, racial disparities and community engagement.

"Allen has been key to transitioning the Trust's organizational strategies and process from traditional responsive grantmaking to collaborative strategic philanthropy," Karen McNeil-Miller, president of the Trust, says in a statement.

As of the end of 2008, the Trust held assets valued at about $568 million. It awarded 180 grants totaling about $33 million last year.
