Spangler Foundation awards over $4.5 million

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The C.D. Spangler Foundation has awarded over $4.5 million to educational institution and nonprofits.

The gifts included $1 million each to the University of North Carolina system and Central Piedmont Community College to provide $1,000 college scholarships for male African-American students who graduate from West Charlotte High School.

The foundation also gave $150,000 to Communities in Schools to support dropout prevention efforts at West Charlotte High School, and $50,000 to the school to pay for college entrance fees for students.

Other gifts include:

• $1.5 million for Teach for America.
• $100,000 to New Leaders for New Schools to provide training for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools administrators.
• $100,000 to the school system's Parent University
• $1000, to Bright Beginnings, a school-system program for pre-schoolers.
• $176,000 to be divided among the system's 176 principals.
• $250,000 to the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to support early childhood literacy.
