Wilmington funder awards $730,000

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Nonprofits in Southeastern North Carolina received a helping hand from a local funder to help them address mounting needs.

The Community Foundation of Southeastern North Carolina in December awarded a total of $730,000 to nonprofits in the region, bringing to almost $1.5 million its total donations for 2008.

The Good Shepherd Center received $7,350 to help move homeless families out of shelters and into permanent housing.

The Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum received $14,164 to present programs in music, dance, drama and the visual arts.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation will use a $10,000 grant to provide scholarships for nursing students.

And the benevolence fund of the Global River Church of Wilmington will use $12,000 to help needy families pay their bills.

The foundation is based in Wilmington and serves New Hanover, Bladen, Brunswick, Pender and Columbus counties.
