Asheville United Way tops goal

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County raised $5,573,450 million during its 2009 annual campaign, The Asheville Citizen Times reported Nov. 7.

The agency topped the goal it had set for itself, an accomplishment it did not achieve in 2008.

The money raised will benefit 85 programs run by 37 local nonprofits, which will be invited to submit grant proposals in December.

"We knew the needs would be greater," Leon Elliston, chair of the 2009 campaign, says in a statement. "This year is the most difficult year in this community in my lifetime."

United Way presented Sprit of the Mountains awards to Asheville Savings Bank, the top fundraiser in the finance division, and to WilsonArt, another top-performing group.

The 2010 campaign will be chaired by Suzanne DeFerie, CEO of Asheville Savings Bank.
