RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County raised over $1.1 million in its annual campaign, exceeding its goal by over $4,500 goal.

The total included $50,000 the agency raised in online contributions through a new website and fundraising software that lets individuals set up a personal fundraising page and solicit friends online.

"The strategy paid off and allowed us to build capacity in a noin-traditional way, without jeopardizing the advocacy of our current constituents," Valeska Wittek, director of development and marketing, says in a statement.

The Boys & Girls Clubs, which serves over 4,500 at-risk youth ages six to 18 at seven locations in Wake County, and also operates a summer day camp in Nash County, enlisted over 200 community volunteers for the campaign.

Funds raised in the campaign are used to sponsor children to attend summer camp and to support after-school homework help and tutoring and programs on topics that include technology, arts and crafts, athletics and leadership.

Steven Lilly, Boys & Girls Clubs board chair and chief financial officer at Triangle Capital Corporation, headed the campaign, which was co-chaired by Martin Borden, senior vice president and client development officer at Paragon Commercial Bank, and Jerry Stoltz, co-owner of Divine Stoltz Development, who led over 31 fundraising teams.
