Charlotte arts funder awards $8.3 million

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In its first grant cycle of the 2010 fiscal year, the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte will award grants totaling $8,336,496 to 118 area arts groups.

The grants, down from $12.7 million last year, represent the first installment in what the organization says will be a leaner funding year.

The council's raised $7 million during its 2009 annual fund drive, almost 40 percent below the $11.2 million raised in 2008, and the group is receiving less funding from the city and county and from the North Carolina Arts Council.

In response, the council has trimmed its operating budget by $1 million and suspended nine initiatives and grantmaking programs, including Latino Community Initiatives, Arts in Healthcare and Creative Renewal Fellowships.

The most recent round of grants were awarded in five funding areas: Cultural Education Schools, Cultural Project, Cultural Access, Mecklenburg Town Initiative and Operating Support.

The council will award a second round of grants in the fall for artists, special projects and technical assistance.
