Charlotte funder aids needy kids

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A final round of grants from the Critical Need Response Fund totaled $127,170 and will benefit homeless children in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.

The four grants close out the fund, which was created by Foundation for the Carolinas last December and has raised and awarded $2,694,679 to help local citizens affected by the economic downturn.

The fund was led by a volunteer task force that raised and distributed the money between December and April 10.

The foundation managed the account and waived administrative fees.

"The task force feels this strategy assures that children who are housed in emergency shelters at night have supervision, food and support during the day," Harry Jones, co-chair of the task force, says in a statement.

Charlotte Emergency Housing received $40,000 for its Rainbow Room child-care center.

The Salvation Army Center of Hope received $40,000 to provide a recreation and education program for children at its shelter.

The YWCA received $19,500 to provide summer-camp services.

An unnamed organization, which previously received a grant from the fund, received the remaining $27,670.
