Charlotte United Way names review panel

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- United Way of Central Carolinas has created an ad-hoc governance review panel, as requested by the board of directors, with the goal of restoring public trust after a scandal erupted over salary and benefits for ousted CEO Gloria Pace King.

Foundation for the Carolinas has offered a grant of up to $25,000 to pay for outside services needed by the panel, which will review the decisions that led to the approval of a $1.2 million compensation package for King, and will make recommendations for improving transparency.

Charlotte attorney Robert Sink, who was president of the North Carolina State Bar in 1998, will serve as volunteer chair of the panel.

Other panel members are:

* A. Todd Brown, a partner in Hunton & Williams law firm

* Yvonne M. Evans, Superior Court judge, 26th Judicial District

* Jill Flynn, managing director, Flynn-Heath Leadership

* Henry C. Lomax Jr., chief investment officer, Crescent Resources

* Thomas W. Ross, president, Davidson College

* Jane Spainhour, social studies teacher, Concord Middle School

"Together we will work to understand the decision-making process of the organization and what it might do differently to regain and keep the trust of the community," Sink says in a statement.

Sink says he expects to issue a public report by the end of this year.
