CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte has broken ground on a new 28-bedroom facility and raised nearly $6 million in a capital campaign that still aims to raise $3 million to help furnish and maintain the facility.

The new facility, to be located on the 1600 block of East Morehead Street on land donated by Carolinas Medical Center, is scheduled to open late this year and will serve families of children treated at Levine Children's Hospital and Hemby Children's Hospital.

Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte says Charlotte is the biggest U.S. city that does not yet have a Ronald McDonald House.

Housing one family per suite, the 35,000 square-foot facility is expected to provide over 10,000 nights a year for patients' families and also will include a community kitchen, great room, learning center, playground and sitting portch.

Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte says the cost of building and maintaining the facility will come mainly from individual and corporate donations.

Major donors include ACN Inc., Carolinas Medical Center, J.F. Schultze Construction, Kasey Kahne Foundation, Leon Levine Foundation, Little Diversified Architectural Consultant, Ray Evernham, Schabel family and Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation.
