DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson College raised a total of $8.06 million during its latest annual fund drive, topping its goal of $7.8 million, with more than six in 10 alumni donating.

"Many people faced very challenging economic conditions," Maria Aldrich, director of the annual fund, says in a statement. "But we have a wonderful college family, and they acted generously to support the experience and tradition we value."

Gifts to the annual fund will be used to cover about 8.6 percent of the school's $93 million operating budget in the coming fiscal year.

Donors designated a total of $1.35 million to the Davidson Trust, a scholarship program that provides grants and work-study opportunities to supplant loans for students with demonstrated financial need.

The annual fund also supports current operating expenses, the Davidson Athletic Foundation and Classical 89.9 WDAV.

Alison Hall Mauze, class of 1984, chaired the national annual fund, while Vincent Benjamin, class of 2004, chaired the young-alumni effort, and Mark and Lynn Filipski led the Parents Council, which raised over $1 million.
