Duke Endowment gives DukeMed record $50M

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Duke Endowment in Charlotte has granted $50 million to Duke University Medical Center in Durham for a medical education facility and a pediatric inpatient facility.

The medical center will build the Duke University School of Medicine Education Center with $35 million from the grant, the largest single gift in the hospital's history.

Plans have yet to be finalized but will focus on creating greater interaction between students, researchers and professors with amenities like simulation labs and team-based learning programs, which are increasingly replacing traditional lecture-based learning, Nancy Andrews, dean of the Duke University School of Medicine, says in a statement.

The remaining $15 million will build a facility to link all inpatient and outpatient services at McGovern-Davison Children's Health Center.

 "James B. Duke's original gift in 1925 created the School of Medicine, hospital and nurses' home, and The Duke Endowment has continued that important relationship over the years," Russell M. Robinson, chair of the Duke Endowment, says in a statement. 

Established in 1924 by James B. Duke, who founded Duke University, The Duke Endowment has over $3.2 billion in assets and funds higher education, health care, rural churches and children's services.
