Five leaders get sabbatical grants

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Five North Carolina nonprofit leaders will take paid sabbaticals this year as recipients of grant awards from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

Each recipient will receive $25,000 from the foundation, which has provided sabbatical awards for 20 years, to take three to six months away from their jobs.

Recipients can use their time off however they choose, with the goal of coming back to work renewed and ready to continue their work in the nonprofit sector.

"People who become leaders of nonprofit often are selfless, driven people," Leslie Winner, executive director of the foundation, says in a statement. "They give a full measure and then more until, in many instances, they drain their personal energy."

The foundation selected five recipients this year:

  • Gregory M. Bounds, CEO of Goshen Medical Center, Faison
  • James L. Brooks, executive director of Project Compassion, Chapel Hill
  • Doris A. Howington, executive director of The Wright Center, Rocky Mount
  • Jackie M. Thamm, executive director Friend to Friend Crisis Center, Carthage
  • Lisa Twiggs, executive director of Family Resources of Cherokee County, Murphy
