Forsyth United Way raises over $17.4 million

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With the worsening economy as a backdrop, United Way of Forsyth County raised $17,473,087 during its 2008 campaign, 4.9 percent shy of its goal.

Innovation was key to raising money this year, the organization says.

BB&T hosted a dodgeball tournament to benefit United Way, and offered a $100,000 match that recruited more than 40 new businesses to the drive.

The law firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice held a raffle that doubled participation by the firm's employees.

And Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center hosted a Wii video-game tournament.

During its second year, the Women's Leadership Council, an affinity group of United Way, gained 706 members.

The council, chaired by Sallye Liner, president of Forsyth Medical Center and Affiliates, matches members' gifts through a five-year, $1 million grant from R.J. Reynolds Foundation.

The campaign was chaired by Steve Wiggs, chief marketing officer for BB&T Corporation.
