Greensboro arts funder retools grants

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Following a six-month effort to better understand the needs of its local community, United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro has changed its grantmaking process.

The organization received feedback from almost 3,000 people and is using the information to change its funding strategy to ensure it reaches as many people as possible.

"This gives us greater flexibility and an opportunity to support art where are happens - to touch Greensboro's very diverse population," board member Steve Sumerford says in a statement.

The group's new mission statement is to "inspire growth of creative expression by providing strategic and financial leadership to arts organizations, artists and schools."

Its new Cultural Partner Grant Investment program will fund artists and groups whose efforts meet one or more of the Arts Council's funding priorities:

* Serve and engage the area's diverse community

* Position Greensboro as a nationally recognized, vibrant center for the arts

* Foster the education of children through the arts

Artists and groups interested in receiving funding from the Arts Council must attend one of two orientation sessions scheduled for Feb. 13 and Feb. 20, both from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Greensboro Cultural Center.

Those wishing to apply for grants must submit a letter of intent by Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.; full applications are due Feb. 27.
