Greensboro mobilizes to help needy

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- As economic woes find their way to more and more people, the Greensboro community is coming together to help its own.

Through an effort called Operation Greensboro Cares, local charities and businesses are working together to raise money to meet skyrocketing demand for emergency food and shelter.

The Operation Greensboro Cares fund, created by United Way of Greater Greensboro in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, now will be used to funnel funds to a network of organizations serving the needy.

Among those recipient groups are Faith Action, Greensboro Urban Ministry, Senior Resources of Guilford and Salvation Army of Greensboro.

The resources of these and other groups serving the needy are dwindling in the face of rising needs, and those needs are expected to grow throughout the winter, Otis Wilson, board member of both the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro and the local United Way, says in a statement.

"We are combining forces to increase awareness of the need and to quickly raise funds to help Greensboro families get their basic needs met during the upcoming winter months," he says.

Donations to the fund can be made online, by calling 336.378.6600 or by mail at P.O. Box 14985, Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
