Habitat teams on neighborhood garden

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro has built over 30 single-family homes and eight townhomes in Eastside Park, helped build a community center there, and has another 12 townhomes under construction in the neighborhood.

And on June 5, it partnered with local residents to complete construction of beds fences at the Eastside Community Garden, a collaborative effort that has included local agencies, companies and individual donors.

Residents, who have agreed to avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides, already have claimed 12 of the 15 beds that will be constructed in the garden at 209 Gillespie St.

Construction of the garden's 16 beds was completed at a one-day event on June 5, coordinated by Karen Neill, agricultural extension agent in the Greensboro office of Cooperative Extension of North Carolina State University and N.C. A&T State University, along with her volunteer team of 12 master gardeners.

The garden, one of 35 community gardens that Cooperative Extension has assisted with in the past two years, is located on land leased to Habitat by the Redevelopment Commission of Greensboro and is located to the rear of My Sister Susan's House, a newly constructed home for young mothers.

Robert and Kathy Davis, trustees of The George Adreve Foudnation, donated funds to develop garden

The parks and recreation department of the City of Greensboro provided soil, mulch, compost and land preparation, while Seegar's Fencing provided and installed a fence at a deeply discounted price; Dale Mitchell of Mitchell Landscapes drafted a garden plan on a voluntary basis; and Mary Stanton Coltrane will decorate the garden and fence for her Girl Scout Gold Award.
