Hartzell leaving InterAct for state job

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Adam Hartzell will step down as executive director of InterAct at the end of April to become senior deputy attorney general for the consumer protection division in the state Department of Justice.

Serving as interim executive director will be Kathy Johnson, associate executive director of the agency, which serves survivors of domestic violence and rate and sexual assault.

Hartzell has served as executive director for seven years, overseeing a capital campaign that raised $5.3 million and the opening of a new 60,000-square-foot Family Safety and Empowerment Center that houses InterAct and nine other agencies.

Johnson, who has worked at the agency for 14 years, designed and put into effect its collaborative model, which serves over 40,000 people a year.

"Kathy Johnson is one of those rare leaders that possesses excellent management, communication and academic skills," Kathy Roberts, chair of InterAct's board of directors, says in a statement.

The InterAct board is forming a search committee that will announce its plans later this month.
