HIGH POINT, N.C. -- United Way of Greater High Point raised just over $4.4 million in its 2010 fundraising campaign, up 4 percent from the total raised last year and exceeding its goal by over $150,000.

The percentage by which the campaign exceeded the total raised last year was the highest in among United Ways in North Carolina's biggest metropolitan areas, including Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro, Forsyth County, the Triangle and Wilmington, says Bobby Smith, executive director.

Based on that metric, it was the third time in four years High Point's United Way bested its peers in the state's major metro area. The one time in those four years it did not outperform its peers, High Point's United Way ranked second based on the measurement.

Old Dominion Freight Line, with employee and corporate giving totaling $281,801, up 6 percent from last year, was the top contributor.

The city of High Point was the second largest donor, with a total gift of $255,764.

The campaign also generated a total of $768,000 in 64 gifts of $10,000 of more, up from $729,772 in 61 gifts at that level in 2009.

Other large donors include Bank of America - Triad Center; Sealy; High Point Regional Health System; High Point Bank & Trust; New Breed Logistics; Thomas Built Buses; Guilford County Schools; Dixon Hughes; Banner Pharmacaps; Cornerstone Healthcare; Aetna; and High Point University.

Companies posting big increases compared to last year include Thomas Built Buses; Cross Company; High Point University; Kao Specialties; Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep; Bank of North Carolina; Banner Pharmacaps; New Breed Logistics; and Vann York Auto Group.

Greg York, president and CEO of Vann York Auto Group will lead the 2011 campaign, which begins this summer and kicks off in September.
