Hill Center launches $12 million campaign

DURHAM, N.C. - The Hill Center has launched a campaign to raise $12 million with the groundbreaking ceremony for a new teacher-training center.

The campaign will fund the construction of the $4 million Kirby-Horton Teacher Training Center, and expand curricular programs.

Commitments already total $8.66 million, with six gifts of $1 million or more from the F.M. Kirby Foundation, NC GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Mebane Charitable Foundation, Anne Gibson Hill, and two anonymous donors. 

The new teacher-training center, scheduled to open January 2009, is planned as an energy-efficient building with space for informal collaboration and social events.

"Our programs are in such demand that we have outgrown our building," says Shary Maskel, director and president of The Hill Center.  "We have trained teachers from 80 counties in North Carolina, 17 states and 10 countries."

Campaign proceeds will also go to support remedial reading programs like the Reading Achievement Program and HELP, an early literacy development project.

The Center also plans to add a new writing remediation program in Durham schools and to expand a number of elementary and pre-school programs to the middle-school level.
