Mauceri to head opera institute

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The chancellor of the North Carolina School of the Arts will become executive director of the school's A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute this summer.

John Mauceri, who will continue his duties as chancellor, succeeds Thomas Clark, dean of the School of Music, who has been named director of the School of Music at Texas State University in San Marcos.

"As the North Carolina School of the Arts searches for a new dean of music during 2008-09, we have asked John to help us re-envision the Fletcher Opera Institute as a cross-disciplinary endeavor," Barbara Goodmon, president of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation and a member of the school's board of trustees, says in a statement.

Before joining the School of the Arts, Mauceri served as music director for the Washington Opera, the Scottish Opera, the Teatro Regio in Italy, and the Pittsburgh Opera.

The Fletcher Opera Institute was installed at the School of the Arts in 2001 with a total funding commitment of $10 million over 10 years from the Raleigh-based Fletcher Foundation, which publishes the Philanthropy Journal.
