MCNC launches education initiative

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, MCNC aims to boost the economic health of the state by strengthening students' science, math engineering and technology skills.

As the state transitions to an economy based on knowledge, technology and creativity, this set of skills, called STEM skills, is increasingly important for the state's workforce, the Research Triangle Park-based nonprofit says.

The goal of the new North Carolina STEM Community Collaborative, launched with $475,000 in funding from the Gates foundation, is to make sure the state's future workforce is ready to live and work in the 21^st century.

The effort is targeted at those communities whose economic health depends upon a labor force with strong skills in science, technology, engineering and math.

The effort will provide new and existing services, including MCNC's North Carolina Research and Education Network, an internet connection for the state's education community. It also will provide access to advanced technology, relevant experts and other resources.

The effort will be led by Karl Rectanus, who previously worked with eCivis Inc., a technology company, and started his own consulting firm called TechExecutives.
