Media discussion set for Feb. 17

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A panel of regional news professionals will share their thoughts on new media with an audience of nonprofit leaders Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the President's Conference Room at Shaw University.

The panel, which will air on C-SPAN, will cover recent changes in news media and offer advice to nonprofits trying to draw attention to their missions.

"With the new-media age, even though we have more channels, the ability to get the message out may not be getting any easier," says David Marshall, chair of the mass communications department at Shaw University. "Nonprofits that understand the rules of new media will be in a better place to move forward in the 21st century."

Panelists will include:

* Dan Barkin, senior online editor for The News & Observer

* Alan Mason, vice president and general manager of News 14 Carolina

* Nannette Wilson, director of digital journalism at NBC 17

* James Goodmon Jr., vice president and general manager of New Media Group, Capitol Broadcasting Company. Goodmon also serves on the board of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, which publishes the Philanthropy Journal.

Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and network with panelists after the discussion, which is co-sponsored by Time Warner Cable. Lunch will be served.

Though the event is free and open to the public, space is limited. To reserve a seat, contact David Marshall at 919.546.8369, or by e-mail at dmarshall@shawu.edu.
