Nonprofit jobs in state grew in recession

When for-profit employment in North Carolina was shrinking during the two worst years of the recession, nonprofit jobs in the state were growing, a new study says.

Nonprofit employment in the state grew 4.2 percent a year on average between the second quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2007, according to initial analysis of data on 21 states by the Center for Civil Studies at Johns Hopkins University. [See related story.]

During the same period, for-profit jobs in the state fell 4.4 percent a year on average.

Nonprofit employment in North Carolina grew faster in that two-year period than in every other state among those studied except the District of Columbia, which posted growth of 5.2 percent a year on average in nonprofit jobs.

Nonprofit jobs in North Carolina in the period also grew faster than the 3.4 percent a year it had grown on average from 2001 to 2007, a period when for-profit jobs in the state fell 0.7 percent a year on average.

Among all 21 states studied, nonprofit jobs grew 2.5 percent a year on average for the two year period, compared to a decline of 3.3 percent a year on average in for-profit jobs.

From 2001 to 2007, nonprofit jobs in all 21 states grew 2.3 percent a year on average, compared to growth of 0.2 percent a year on average in for-profit employment in those states.
