Nonprofits fight state budget cuts
RALEIGH, N.C. - A group of North Carolina nonprofits is asking state lawmakers to plug the growing state budget gap through tax increases rather than cuts in services, the News & Observer reported June 2.
Together NC, a group of more than 80 nonprofits and service providers is holding a press conference June 2 in front of the legislative building in Raleigh in hopes of influencing members of the state House of Representatives.
House members currently are working on a budget proposal that many say will make deeper cuts than Gov. Beverly Purdue or the state Senate have recommended.
Together NC says cutting services to plug the budget gap, which is estimated to be at least $1.5 billion next year, would hurt low-income families across the state.
