Obama’s charge sparks food drives

Inspired by President-elect Barack Obama's charge to the nation to engage in community service, Triangle-area residents will be holding a series of food drives in January.

Organized by individuals and groups in Durham, Orange, Chatham, Person and Wake counties, the "Yes We Cans" Food Drive will collect donations of food and money to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

The drives are scheduled coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to be celebrated this year on Jan. 19, but will take place at various time on and around the holiday.

A final event will be held to celebrate the food drives on Jan. 24 at G-Loft Lounge in Durham and will be sponsored by the Durham County Democratic Party and Durham for Obama.
