Partnership aims to expand degree programs

BOONE, N.C. -- Four educational institutions in western North Carolina have teamed to create the Appalachian State University Greater Hickory Partnership, an effort to expand college degree offerings in Catawba, Caldwell and Burke counties.

Appalachian State University in Boone, Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in Hudson entered into the agreement March 3.

The partnership, to be based in Hickory, will set up facilities at each of its three participating community colleges to provide local residents more opportunities for higher education.

The Hickory Metro Education Center will be disbanded to form one of the three facilities, to be known as the Appalachian State University Center at Hickory.

Jane Everson, executive director of the education center, will take over as director of the partnership.
