School of the Arts plans benefit concert

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - World-renowned opera singer Federica von Stade will perform at a benefit concert hosted by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts on Nov. 10 at the Steven's Center in Winston-Salem.

Proceeds from the event will be used to create a $250,000 endowed professorship for a coach for the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute at the school.

Von Stade, a mezzo-soprano, will perform a solo recital that includes the aria "Va, Laisse couler mes larmes" from "Werther" as well as selections by Mahler, Rorem and Sondheim.

She also will lead a master class on Nov. 11 for selected vocal students and fellows of the Fletcher Opera Institute. The class is free and open to the public, but requires a reservation.

Von Stade has been performing for three decades in top opera houses around the world, spent most of her career as a member of the Metropolitan Opera, and appeared with several other major opera companies, including the San Francisco Opera, Teatro alla Scalla, the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera.

Tickets for the Nov. 10 performance range from $15 to $50 and can be purchased online or by calling 336.721.1945.

Reservations for the Nov. 11 master class can be made by calling 336.721.1945.
